FROM THE PASTOR . . .
Evidences of the Resurrection
In the Savior, Dear Christian Friends,
Luther once wrote “Our Lord has written the promise of the resurrection not in books alone, but in every leaf in springtime.” So God has not left Himself without witness (Acts 14:17). The resurrection of Jesus Christ from the grave is as well-evidenced and documented a fact as we will find recorded anywhere in history.
First, there is the simple fact of the empty tomb. The place of Joseph of Arimathea’s tomb where Jesus was laid was well known. If the body was still in the tomb, the disciples could never have preached that Jesus was risen from the grave.
Second, the changed lives of the disciples. This fearful little band of followers who fled and hid when Jesus was captured, was transformed into bold world-changers after they saw, spoke with, and ate with the risen Christ. Try telling doubting Thomas he hadn’t actually seen what he saw and touched what he touched.
Third, the Lord’s Day. From the time of the resurrection, Jesus’ disciples began to meet on the first day of the week for worship, prayer, and breaking of bread. This was something unheard of before that time, a custom that has continued to the present. This day became known as the “Lord’s Day.” (Acts 20:7)
Fourth, the coming of the Holy Spirit. The events of Pentecost Day were a direct outcome of the promise made by the risen Christ. The Holy Spirit was given to the early believers as He is given to believers still today.
Fifth, the New Testament. The inspired writers of the New Testament had a story to “tell the nations” and they told it by word of mouth and by their writing. To which we may add the most convincing evidence of all—our own living faith. This is the Spirit testifying with our spirit (Romans 8:16) that “He is risen! He is risen indeed!”
In Christ Our Living Savior, Pastor Robert List
